A Monstrous Regiment of Women is probably my favorite book in the Mary Russell series. The plot, the characters and the place all come together so perfectly and the action moves at a good pace that I was very bored. While this is the second book in the series, it was one of the last ones I read. It was very hard for me to find a copy. The Latinate phrase ‘monstruous regiment’ means ‘unnatural rule’, and in this highly misogynistic work, Knox argues that the idea of women ruling goes against the laws of God and nature. He argues that female rule challenges the God-given authority of men over women, and that women are incompetent to rule, being weak, foolish and cruel.
